Botox Q & A

by Sejal Shah, MD, FAAD

What is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is a popular injectable most often used for cosmetic treatments such as smoothing lines and wrinkles in the face. It is derived from natural, purified protein of the Botulinum toxin. Using an ultrafine needle, the injections are placed into the muscle that rests just under the skin. The facial muscles become relaxed when the nerve impulses are blocked and a reduction in the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines between the brows to form over time is evident. Once these muscles are at rest, the skin will become smoother, creating a more natural and relaxed appearance. Results typically last up to three to four months. Continuous treatments are necessary in order to maintain the effects over time.

Does BOTOX® hurt?

BOTOX® treatments use ultrafine needles. The procedure is done in the office, is non-invasive, and requires no downtime. No significant pain is evident, only the small prick of a tiny needle can be felt as it is injected into the skin. The injection has been reported to feel like a bee sting or a bug bite. The effects of BOTOX® will start to show in as little as three days. Full effects are usually seen in about ten days. The approximate number of injections needed will vary based on each patient’s individual wants or needs.

What else can BOTOX® treat?

It has been proven that BOTOX® is a useful treatment for medical conditions as well as cosmetic. These types of conditions include:

  • A safe and effective treatment option to help people manage chronic migraine, prevent headaches, and improve their quality of life.
  • Treatment option for excessive sweating. Botox injections are given in affected areas, such as the armpits, hands, feet, or face.
  • An effective way of treating the debilitating condition in which people have a sudden urge to pass urine, urinary incontinence.
  • May help stop muscles contracting or twitching when the person doesn't want them to.
