Tattoo Removal Q & A

by Sejal Shah, MD, FAAD

What is Enlighten?

Most tattoo removal is done through the use of laser energy that is applied to the skin. The enlighten™ laser stands out from other systems by dispensing high energy through intense picosecond pulses. A picosecond is much shorter and provides a more efficient form of breaking down the ink of tattoos, resulting in the need for fewer treatments.

How does Enlighten differ from other options?

Enlighten laser removal is a shorter, yet more powerful, picosecond laser pulse. Picosecond laser pulses have been shown to remove tattoos more completely and in fewer treatment sessions than traditional lasers that have been used prior.

How many treatments are needed?

When a tattoo is placed, the ink is deposited deep within the layers of the skin. To reach all the ink in the skin, multiple treatment sessions are needed. The total number of treatments will depend on the depth and the color of the ink used as well as the size of the tattoo. After the first session with Enlighten, the smallest parts of the ink particles will be broken down. Subsequent treatments will eliminate the remaining particles from the body. In many cases, the tattoo will be completely removed. However, some ink colors are more difficult to clear than others.

What is the procedure like?

Patients have said the procedure feels like a light slapping against the skin. Topical or local anesthetics can be used to minimize discomfort. There may be some redness and swelling immediately following the treatment but these side effects are usually temporary and will subside within hours. There is no downtime for the procedure and patients can return to regular activities immediately following the treatment.
