Acne Q & A

by Sejal Shah, MD, FAAD

How is acne treated?

Acne is a condition common among teenagers and adults. Treatment options range from prescription topical creams, oral antibiotics, birth control pills or other hormonal medications, chemical peels, and laser treatments. Often, a combination of any of these methods will be used so that the best possible results are achieved. At SmarterSkin Dermatology, each patient will receive customized treatment that will work best on the condition causing their acne.

What can I expect during laser acne treatment?

Treatment for acne with the use of lasers involves short bursts of soft, intense light which are directed at the affected areas of the face, back, chest or wherever the acne issue is. The light is used to destroy the bacteria causing the acne. Before the procedure begins, the area of skin to be treated will be cleaned and a thin layer of gel will be applied before the laser is used on the skin. For the actual treatment, the laser specialist will use a hand-held, wand-like laser to burn off the scarred skin cells. Afterwards, fresh skin cells will reproduce, leaving a clean and fresh complexion. The laser acne treatment procedure is very precise, so the treatment specialist only targets the affected skin, leaving unaffected areas alone.

How are acne scars treated?

After the acne is cleared from the skin there may be residual scarring left over. This is particularly common with cystic acne which causes much deeper lesions. SmarterSkin Dermatology in Downtown NYC, provides several treatment options to improve the appearance of these scars. The treatment choice depends on the type of scarring whether it is dark marks, pitted, raised, or a combination. Laser scar removal, or reduction, is one of the most common procedures performed for acne scarring. With the use of a handheld laser specific to dermatology, scars are lessened significantly in office with no downtime or invasive procedures. The type of skin laser treatment that will be most effective for you depends on the type of acne scarring you have. A consultation Dr. Shah will help to develop a plan for your acne treatment and acne scarring.
