Wrinkles Q & A

by Sejal Shah, MD, FAAD

What causes wrinkles?

There are many reasons that wrinkles develop. Some of the most specific reasons are:

Aging — As the skin ages the cells begin to divide slower and the inner layer of the skin, known as the dermis, will thin. During this time the skin also loses its elasticity, becomes more fragile, and is less able to retain moisture.

Facial muscle contractions — Lines between the eyebrows on the forehead, jutting from the corner of the eyes, and around the mouth are believed to develop because of the underlying muscle contractions.

Sun damage — Excessive exposure to the sun can result in premature aging of the skin.

Smoking — Researchers have found that smoke causes a marked reduction in the production of new collagen.

What are the treatment options for wrinkles?

Each individual is different and therefore treatment will be based on individual need. Some common treatment options for smoothing wrinkles include:

Dermabrasion — involves using a professional wand that disperses small crystal-like grains to gently remove damaged skin to reveal new skin beneath.

Chemical peels — using professional grade acid to strip the top layer of skin and reveal smoother skin beneath.

Laser skin resurfacing — a treatment using a concentrated pulse of light on irregular patches of skin. Used to reduce facial wrinkles and irregularities caused by sun damage or acne.

Botox injection therapy — Botox® is a medicine derived from the botulinum toxin. It works to block the signals that cause muscles to contract. Usually focused on areas such as frown lines, crows feet around the eyes, and lines upon the forehead.

Fillers – Some wrinkles may require a filler to fill-in/lift up the depression. Prominent folds around the mouth, nose, and chin are the most commonly treated.

Facelift — With a facelift, excess skin and fat are surgically removed on the face and neck. Tightening of the muscular and connective tissue layers is also performed.

Retinoids — Derived from vitamin A, retinoids are topical treatments that you apply to your skin to reduce fine wrinkles, splotches, and skin roughness.
